Undesirable Secrets made its New York City debut this past August at Theatre for the New City’s Dream Up Festival. Performed in the Cabaret Theatre, the solo play told the true story of Anthony Acevedo, a Mexican American WWII medic and Holocaust survivor.

Audiences responded with standing ovations, praising it as “a triumph in performance and writing” for its urgency, depth, and emotional force.

The production now looks ahead to its Off-Broadway premiere at Theatre Row on November 1, 2025, as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival, where Anthony’s story will reach an even wider audience.

I was honored to serve as the Featured Author for Oakland County Intermediate School District’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration on September 23, 2025. This event provided a meaningful opportunity to engage with students and educators, sharing insights into my journey as a writer and the experiences that have shaped my work.

During our time together, I discussed the inspirations behind my books, including Brown Son of Lorca and Undesirable Secrets, and reflected on the cultural narratives that influence my storytelling. Together, we explored themes of identity, heritage, and the power of voice in literature.

This event was part of Oakland County ISD’s commitment to celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to our nation’s history and culture. Their series of events aimed to educate and inspire, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation within the community.

I am deeply grateful to Christina Kozlowski, Suzanne Toohey, Christy Osborne, and Kelsey Witt for their thoughtful planning and warm support throughout this program. Their dedication to uplifting voices and fostering meaningful dialogue made the event both memorable and impactful.

Thank you, Chicago, Scott, and Sylvia for an unforgettable experience!
And Spencer Ball for his original song, The Book (The Diary)

Undesirable Secrets made its Chicago debut at Mrs. Murphy & Sons Irish Bistro as part of the acclaimed Solo Sunday series, produced by Scott Whitehair. The intimate space created an unforgettable evening of solo theatre, bringing Anthony Acevedo’s powerful story to life in a way that deeply moved the audience.

The performance opened with the hauntingly beautiful original song “The Book (The Diary)” by Chicago musician Spencer Ball, setting the tone for the emotional journey that followed.

Special thanks to Scott Whitehair, his fiancée Sylvia, and to everyone who stayed afterward to talk and share their thoughts. Hearing the audience’s reflections and seeing their interest in Anthony’s story was both humbling and inspiring.

Undesirable Secrets returned to Frisco Lakes for a special encore performance—an exclusive event for community members and their guests. It was a heartfelt thank-you to the place where it all began. Frisco Lakes had been the very first community to host the premiere of the solo show, and this return engagement served as a way of honoring that early support and continuing the journey together. Special thanks went to Ethan Salazar, Dana and Howard Hall, Ramona Logan, Bill and Carala Doll, members of the Mosaic Cultural Group, and the various veteran and Jewish organizations who supported the show and its message.

This fall, I’ll be taking the stage Off-Broadway in the world premiere of my one-man play Undesirable Secrets, presented as part of the acclaimed United Solo Theatre Festival in New York City. The performance will take place November 1, 2025, at the legendary Theatre Row.

This moment marks not just a milestone in my career—but a moment of truth for a story that has been buried too long.

Undesirable Secrets is based on the harrowing yet inspiring true story of Anthony C. Acevedo, a Mexican American WWII medic who became the first registered Mexican American Holocaust survivor. Held prisoner at Berga an der Elster, a Nazi slave labor camp, Anthony carried unspeakable trauma—and chose silence, until years later, he finally spoke up. This is a story about survival, shame, resilience, and the cost of keeping secrets for too long.
