Releasing June 9, 2025 — the day I’ll be presenting selections from this collection in New York City at La Nacional, as part of Danisarte’s celebration of the life and legacy of Federico García Lorca, founded by the acclaimed actress Alicia Kaplan. Brown Son of Lorca is the most personal works I’ve ever written. It’s a collection of poems and short prose pieces that explore what it means to grow up brown—what it means to remember, to belong, to resist forgetting. The boy who walks through these pages—curious, quiet, determined—is me, and he is also so many others. Lorca’s spirit is woven throughout this work. His courage, lyricism, and tragic beauty are touchstones I return to, not just as a writer, but as someone who understands what it means to live at the intersection of silence and voice.
